Hospice helps grieving youth

Coping with the loss of a loved one is one of life’s great difficulties. It can be especially difficult for children and youth.

According to Hospice of Hilo Children’s Bereavement Counselor Fujio Sato, “The challenges a young person faces in managing grief may be very different from those an adult experiences.”

Hospice of Hilo offers free ohana-based bereavement camps, which include every family member, and help children, youth and families find healing during a very desolate time in their lives. These programs ensure that East Hawaii’s children and youth can move forward in the face of tremendous loss and continue to positively add to the fabric of their community.

The six bereavement camps, free to participants, are an important component of the Children’s Bereavement Program. They are designed to create a safe environment where children, youth and families can do their grief work. Each camp helps families understand the grief process by teaching them coping strategies, providing age appropriate and culturally supportive programs, and utilizing art, play and music to create a supportive environment.

Hospice of Hilo is a non-profit agency that has served the east and south portions of Hawaii since 1983. It belong to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
